The short answer

A Jackery solar generator is a portable power station sold together with solar panels. Jackery says a solar generator "combines a portable power station and solar panels into a single bundle." 1 It's not a fuel generator and it's not wired into your house.

What a Jackery solar generator is

The name is a little misleading. There's no engine. Jackery explains the idea in one line: "A portable power station stores electricity. A solar panel generates electricity from sunlight. A solar generator combines both (a portable power station bundled with solar panels) into a complete, self-sustaining energy system." 1

So a Jackery solar generator kit has two jobs split between two parts. The panels collect sunlight. The power station holds the energy and hands it out through its outlets.

If you want the basics of the box itself, our guide to portable power stations covers the battery, inverter and outlets.

How the sun's energy reaches your devices

Jackery describes the path in plain steps. Its SolarSaga panels "absorb the sun's rays falling on the PV panels and generate DC electricity." 1

That power goes into the station. There, "the built-in pure sine wave inverter converts DC to AC electricity." 1 AC is what a phone charger, a lamp or a laptop brick expects from a wall socket.

The panel alone can't run your appliances. Jackery says "a solar panel cannot power appliances directly (with the exception of small built-in USB/DC outputs on some panels)." 1

Because the station stores the energy, you can use it after dark. The sun fills the tank during the day.

Other ways to recharge it

Solar isn't the only input. Jackery says its stations "can be recharged with a wall outlet, car adapter, or solar panels (sold separately)." 1

That last part matters. A bare station comes without panels. The kit is the version with panels in the box.

During an outage, the grid outlet won't help. Jackery says SolarSaga panels "can help you recharge the power station without being dependent on the electricity grid." 1 Clouds, shade and the time of year still decide how much you collect.

Kit sizes: what Jackery lists

Jackery sells solar generators in several sizes. Its own site lists the small Solar Generator 300 v2 with "288Wh | 300W Output." 1

The Solar Generator 1500 v2 gets "1536Wh capacity | 2000W AC output." 1 At the top, the Solar Generator 5000 Plus is listed at "5040Wh | 7200W | 120V/240V." 1

Read those two numbers the same way each time. Watt-hours (Wh) is how much energy the battery holds. Watts (W) is how much it can supply at once.

Jackery lists the capacity and output but we haven't quoted a price here. Prices and bundles change, and the maker's page is the place to check today's US dollar figure and what's in the box.

How long a kit will run: a worked estimate

Take the 1536Wh figure Jackery lists for the Solar Generator 1500 v2. 1 Assume 90 percent of that energy is usable, to allow for conversion losses. That 0.9 is our own assumption, not Jackery's.

- A 100 W load: 1,536 Wh × 0.9 ÷ 100 W = about 13.8 hours. 1 - A 300 W load: 1,536 Wh × 0.9 ÷ 300 W = about 4.6 hours. 1

These are estimates only. Check the label on each appliance for its real watts. A device that starts a motor may pull far more for a moment than its running figure.

Jackery doesn't give us a runtime promise on the pages we read, so don't treat our arithmetic as one.

What a kit can and can't do for a home

A kit powers things you plug into the station. For "more serious home backup," Jackery points to larger units such as the HomePower 3000 (3,072Wh) and HomePower 3600 Plus (3,584Wh). Those "keep a refrigerator, WiFi router, lights, and other essential devices running through multi-hour and multi-day outages." 1

That's the maker's description, not a test of ours. We haven't used this equipment.

A smaller kit suits a few essentials: phones, a router, a light. It isn't a whole-house system. For wired-in options, see how home battery backup works.

Safety: never plug it into a wall outlet

Never run a cord from a kit into a wall outlet to feed your house. That's backfeeding. Poudre Valley REA lists the people at risk: "the neighboring properties, and to our lineworkers and other first responders." 2

Anything wired into the home belongs to a licensed electrician. Run your devices from the station's own outlets, and follow Jackery's manual for placement and charging.

What to compare before you buy

Put the maker's figures side by side:

- Capacity (Wh): how much energy the battery holds. - Output (W): what you can run at the same time. - Panels in the kit: how many, and what each is rated for. - Battery chemistry: our LiFePO4 battery guide explains why it matters for lifespan. - Price and warranty: read both on Jackery's page, with the date you checked.

Jackery also notes that buying the parts as a bundle means "all included components (power station, solar panels, and cables) are confirmed compatible." 1 If you pair a station with panels bought separately, check compatibility first.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Jackery solar generator?

It's a portable power station bundled with solar panels. Jackery says a solar generator "combines a portable power station and solar panels into a single bundle." 1

How does a Jackery solar generator work?

The panels make DC electricity from sunlight. The station's "built-in pure sine wave inverter converts DC to AC electricity." 1

Can a Jackery solar generator charge without the sun?

Yes. Jackery says its stations "can be recharged with a wall outlet, car adapter, or solar panels (sold separately)." 1

Can a solar panel run my appliances on its own?

Jackery says "a solar panel cannot power appliances directly (with the exception of small built-in USB/DC outputs on some panels)." 1

Can I power my house by plugging a kit into a wall outlet?

No. Backfeeding puts "lineworkers and other first responders" at risk, says Poudre Valley REA. 2 Ask a licensed electrician about proper options.
