The short answer

LiFePO4 batteries are a kind of lithium battery. A LiFePO4 battery is "a type of lithium-ion battery using lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) as the cathode material." 1 Wikipedia says that under most conditions it "supports more than 3,000 cycles." 1 Charge one with the charger and settings its maker specifies.

What a LiFePO4 battery is

LiFePO4 stands for lithium iron phosphate. It's also written LFP. Wikipedia describes it as "a type of lithium-ion battery using lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) as the cathode material." 1

That answers a common question: is LiFePO4 a lithium battery? Yes. It's one chemistry inside the lithium-ion family.

The cathode is one of the two electrodes in a cell. Its material is what sets LFP apart from other lithium-ion types. EcoFlow says LiFePO4 batteries are "cobalt-free." 2

You'll find this chemistry in many backup products, including EcoFlow power stations. Our page on portable power stations explained shows how one is built around a battery like this.

LiFePO4 battery life: how many cycles?

One cycle is a full discharge and recharge. Cycle counts are how makers and reference sources describe battery life.

Wikipedia says LFP "supports more than 3,000 cycles" under most conditions, and "more than 10,000 cycles" under optimal conditions. It puts NMC, another common lithium-ion type, at "about 1,000 to 2,300 cycles, depending on conditions." 1

EcoFlow gives a narrower range. It says LFP batteries "can charge and discharge between 2,500 and 5,000 times before losing around 20% of their original capacity." 2 For its DELTA 2 power station, EcoFlow lists "LiFePO4 battery chemistry giving you 3000+ full charge and drain cycles." 3

Sources don't agree to the cycle, and a maker's figure applies only to its own product. Check the number on the model you're considering.

Here's a rough estimate of what 3,000 cycles could mean in years. It uses the lowest figure above and our own assumption of one full cycle a day: 3,000 ÷ 365 = about 8.2 years. A backup battery that only cycles during outages would be used far less often. Calendar aging and the warranty matter too, so treat this as an estimate only. 1

How to charge a LiFePO4 battery

Start with the maker's manual. Charging rules differ between products, and the manual wins.

Vatrer, a battery maker, says: "Always check the charging voltage printed in your battery manual or on the battery label." 4 It adds: "The safest choice is to follow the battery manufacturer’s recommended charging current." 4

Vatrer warns that the wrong charger "can lead to poor charging, BMS shutoff, cell stress, or battery damage." 4 BMS means battery management system, the electronics that watch the battery.

Watch the temperature. Vatrer says: "Do not charge below freezing unless the battery has built-in low-temperature charging protection or internal heating." 4

If your battery is part of a wired-in home system, the installer sets up charging. Don't change it yourself. A licensed electrician handles any wiring.

How to wake up a LiFePO4 battery

Some people search for ways to "wake up" a battery that seems dead. We don't give steps for that.

A battery with a built-in management system can shut itself off. Vatrer lists "BMS shutoff" as one result of using the wrong charger. 4 If a battery won't turn on, read the manual and contact the maker's support.

Never open the case or rebuild the pack. Never connect extra cables to force it back on.

Safety and trade-offs

Wikipedia credits LFP with "good overall thermal and chemical stability." 1

It also warns: "LFP batteries can unfortunately still catch fire under extreme conditions." It lists overcharging, very high temperatures and catastrophic physical damage as causes. 1

So the chemistry helps, but it isn't a free pass. Follow the maker's instructions for charging.

There's a trade-off. Wikipedia says "The specific energy of LFP batteries is lower than that of other common lithium-ion battery types." 1

EcoFlow says LFP "may require external or internal heating in subzero temperatures." 2

What to check before you buy

Ask each maker for the same set of figures.

- Chemistry: does the product page say LiFePO4 or LFP? - Cycles: how many, and to what remaining capacity? EcoFlow's range above is measured "before losing around 20% of their original capacity." 2 - Warranty: EcoFlow says "warranty extended to 5 years" for the DELTA 2. Read the terms. 3 - Temperature limits: can it charge in the cold where you'll keep it? - Capacity and output: our guide to home battery backup shows how kilowatt-hours and kilowatts decide what runs, and you can click here to read its worked runtime example for a home battery.

Frequently asked questions

What is a LiFePO4 battery?

It's "a type of lithium-ion battery using lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) as the cathode material." 1

Is LiFePO4 a lithium battery?

Yes. Wikipedia calls it a type of lithium-ion battery. 1

How long does a LiFePO4 battery last?

Wikipedia says that under most conditions it "supports more than 3,000 cycles." 1 EcoFlow gives 2,500 to 5,000 charge and discharge cycles before it loses around 20% of its original capacity. 2 The maker's figure for your model is the one to use.

How do I charge a LiFePO4 battery?

Follow the maker's manual. Vatrer, a battery maker, says: "Always check the charging voltage printed in your battery manual or on the battery label." 4

How do I wake up a LiFePO4 battery?

We don't give steps. Read the manual and contact the maker. Never open the case.
